“My dearest love,

You’d be so proud of your son today.

We were down at the pool and he decided he

was too big to be swimming with floaties. I

tried to convince to be a bit more patient, but

he argued with me until he got his way. I

swear if I hadn’t known any better, I would’ve

believed I was speaking to you. He ticked off

every reason on his hand as if there was no

other way. Off the floaties went. And what did

he do once they were gone? He jumped into the

pool and made a big splash. At first, I laughed,

until I realized he didn’t come back up. I

hopped to my feet and dove in to grab him, but

couldn’t find him anywhere. I came back up

for air to see him sitting on the side of the

pool, lounging like it was nobody’s business.

After making sure he was okay, I asked him

what happened. His words to me were, “I held

my breath.” No other explanations, just that. I

figured out what he meant later at dinner.

Apparently, your son has been practicing

holding his breath underwater at bath time, so

that when he was finally free of his floaties he

could scare the living crap out of me. I

swear, he’s more like you every day. I wish

you could see it.
